Overview

The EMF-200 is an insertion electromagnetic flow meter designed for large-diameter pipelines where inline installation is not practical. The probe installs through a ball valve saddle directly into the live pipeline, requiring no flow interruption during installation or removal. Based on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction, it contains no moving parts and introduces virtually no pressure drop to the system.

The transmitter displays instantaneous flow rate, velocity, and accumulated volume on a backlit LCD. RS485 Modbus RTU communication and a 4-20mA analog output allow direct integration with SCADA systems, PLCs, and IoT gateways.

Key Features

  • Hot-tap Installation: Install and remove under pressure with no flow interruption
  • Large Pipe Range: DN100 to DN3000 in a single product family
  • No Moving Parts: Zero pressure drop, no mechanical wear, no maintenance
  • Bidirectional: Forward and reverse flow measurement with separate totalizers
  • RS485 Modbus RTU: Full register map including flow, velocity, totalizer, and alarms
  • 4-20mA Output: Loop-powered current output for analog integration
  • Frequency/Pulse Output: Compatible with PLC pulse counters and flow computers
  • IP68 Sensor: Fully submersible probe for wet environments
  • Dual Power: 85-250VAC or 20-36VDC supply options

Applications

  • Aquaculture system manifolds and supply/return mains
  • Large-scale irrigation trunk lines and distribution canals
  • Municipal water supply and distribution networks
  • Industrial process water and cooling circuits
  • Wastewater and effluent flow monitoring
  • Retrofits where inline installation would require pipeline shutdown

Installation

The EMF-200 uses a hot-tap procedure: weld a saddle and ball valve to the pipe, drill the tapping hole with the valve closed, then insert the probe and open the valve. The system stays live throughout. Correct insertion depth is DN/2 for pipes DN400 and below, DN/4 for larger pipes.

For accurate measurement, allow 15 pipe diameters of straight run upstream and 10 downstream. Mount the probe at the 3 or 9 o’clock position on horizontal pipes to keep the electrodes away from sediment and entrained air.

Connectivity and Integration

The EMF-200 communicates over RS485 Modbus RTU at default address 0x01 (1-99 configurable). The register map includes instantaneous flow rate, velocity, flow percentage, conductivity ratio, forward and reverse volume totalizers, and alarm status. All registers are read with function code 0x04. 32-bit values use standard big-endian IEEE-754 float32 or int32 format.

The 4-20mA output (4mA = zero flow, 20mA = full scale) connects directly to analog PLC inputs or standalone data loggers. The frequency/pulse output is opto-isolated and compatible with pulse-counting inputs on most industrial controllers.

Why Electromagnetic Flow Measurement

Electromagnetic meters respond only to fluid velocity, not to density, viscosity, temperature, or pressure. Conductivity must be at least 30 µS/cm, which covers freshwater, seawater, and most process water. There are no obstructions in the flow path, so measurement has no effect on system hydraulics and the sensor does not foul or wear out over time.
